The indigenous people of the western part of the Canary Islands, off the northwest coast of Africa. The indigenous people of the eastern part of the islands are called the Canarians. They were introduced to Europe by Spanish conquistadors in the early 15th century. It is believed that their ancestors were European Cro-Magnons who came via North Africa long ago. They have brown skin, blond hair, and blue or gray eyes, and although these characteristics are still found in many of the islanders today, they are physically and culturally indistinguishable from the Spanish. They once had pottery, lived on milk, butter, sheep, pigs, and fruit, and wore simple clothing made of leather and woven grass. They also had an alphabet-like writing system and were monotheistic in their religion. Today, all inhabitants of the Canary Islands are called Canarians.
