Gun Chronicles - Gun

This is a piece of writing about the introduction of guns in 1543 (Tenbun 12). It was written in 1606 (Keicho 11) by Nanpo Bunshi, a Confucian monk who lived at Dairyuji Temple in Satsuma Province, at the request of Tanegashima Hisatoki. It records how Tanegashima Tokitaka, the lord of Tanegashima, bought two guns from a European who was cast ashore on Tanegashima in 1543 and had his retainers learn how to mix gunpowder, how he gave one of the guns to Suginobō of Negoro Temple in Kishu, and how the following year he also had another European teach him how to cast guns. This piece of writing praises Tokitaka's achievements in the spread of guns, and although it may have been embellished, it is believed to be based on historical materials from the Tanegashima family and the description is considered to be fairly accurate. It is included in Bunno's collection of poems and prose, "Nanpo Bunshu." It is also included in the "Satsuma-han Sosho" collection.
