Oshogbo (English spelling)

A city in southwestern Nigeria. It is located on the banks of the Oshun River, about 290 km northeast of Lagos by rail. The town originated when immigrants from Ibokun, 19 km east of Osogbo, settled on the banks of the Oshun River. It was a small town in the Ilesha Kingdom, but in the early 19th century, it gradually grew larger due to the increase in immigrants chased away by the Muslim Fulani tribe, and in 1840 it became a battlefield in the war between the Fulani and Yoruba tribes. A railroad was built in 1906, and it became a distribution center for cocoa, palm oil, palm kernels, yams, cassava, and cotton. Industries include dyeing, weaving, and cotton ginning. The surrounding area is a tobacco producing region. Population: 420,800 (1991 estimate).

ナイジェリア南西部の都市。ラゴスから鉄道で北東方約 290kmのオシュン川沿岸に位置。オショグボの東 19kmにあるイボクンからの移住者たちがオシュン河畔に定着したのが町の起源で，イレシャ王国の小さな町であったが，19世紀初期にイスラム教徒フラニ族に追われた移住者などの増加で次第に大きくなり，1840年にはフラニ族とヨルバ族の戦争の戦場となった。 1906年鉄道が通じ，ココア，パーム油，パーム核，ヤムイモ，キャッサバ，綿花などの集散地となる。染色，織物，綿繰りなどの工業がある。周辺はタバコの産地。人口 42万 800 (1991推計) 。
