German printmaker active in the Upper Rhine region from 1450 to 1467. His real name, birth and death years, birthplace, and career are unknown. Of 318 confirmed works, 28 are signed with the monogram "ES," from which the appellation is derived. He was the first German to use a monogram on his prints. By using systematic hatching and cross-hatching to create shading and filling, he gave copperplate prints derived from metalwork techniques a pictorial three-dimensional effect and depth, paving the way for the subsequent elevation of copperplate print art by Schongauer and Dürer.

ドイツの版画家。1450‐67年ころオーバーライン地方で活躍。本名，生没年，出身地，経歴は不明。318点の作品が確認されているが，うち28点に〈E.S.〉のモノグラムによる署名があり，呼称はそれに由来する。ドイツにおいて版画作品にモノグラムを用いたのは，彼が最初である。組織的なハッチングやクロスハッチングを駆使した陰影や肉付けの技巧によって，金工の技術から派生した銅版画に絵画的な立体感と奥行きを獲得し，後続のションガウアーやデューラーによる銅版画芸術の高揚に道をひらいた。
