...This process from the original to the creation of the Latin translation had previously been dismissed as complete fiction, but at the end of the 19th century, a Greek papyrus fragment (early 3rd century) containing part of the book was discovered. This led to the discovery of a Greek papyrus fragment (early 3rd century) containing part of the book, and although the theory that Dictys was the author was out of the question, it is now considered certain that the Greek original of the book was at least written in the 2nd or 3rd century. Another similar forgery, written a little later than the Trojan War and also handed down in Latin translation, is the De excidio Troiae historia, said to have been written by Dares the Phrygian. Although neither work has much literary value, they recount the entire story of the 10-year Trojan War in detail, and since they were used by the French poet Benoît de Sainte-Maure in his Narrative of Troy around 1160, the two books had a tremendous influence on medieval European writers who wrote about the Trojan legend.
