Brothers (Brethren) of Common Life

A religious organization founded in the 1370s by Gerard Grote and Florent Radebijns in Deventer, central Holland. The purpose of the organization was to encourage both priests and lay believers to practice contemplation, prayer, and poverty in a community life of neighborly love. This kind of pious life was called "Devotio Moderna" (a new devotion to Christ), and copying the Bible and the writings of the Church Fathers was especially encouraged. At first, the members did not take monastic vows, but after the construction of Bindesheim Abbey in 1387, they became a canonical order based on the "Rule of St. Augustine," and sent such talented people as Thomas à Kempis and Nicholas of Cusa to the world.

オランダ中部のデベンテルに1370年代、ゲラルト・フローテやフローレント・ラーデベインスらによって創設された宗教団体。そこでは司祭も一般信者もともに隣人愛的共同生活のなかで、観想、祈り、清貧を実践することを目的とした。このような敬虔(けいけん)な生活を当時の人々は「新しい（キリストへの）献身」Devotio Modernaとよんだが、ここではとくに聖書や教父著作の書写が勧められた。最初は修道誓願をしなかったが、1387年ビンデスハイム修道院を建設して以後は「聖アウグスティヌス会則」に準拠する聖堂参事会となり、トマス・ア・ケンピスやニコラウス・クザーヌスらの人材を世に送った。
