Prince Tokiyo
[Raw] Ninna 2 (886). Kyoto
[Died] September 10, 927, Kyoto. The third son of Emperor Uda and younger brother of Emperor Daigo. His mother was the daughter of Councillor Tachibana Hiroaki, the Empress Tachibana Yoshiko. He was also called Enjojinomiya, Hosannomiya, and Endonomiya. He came of age in 898, was promoted to the third rank, and was appointed Minister of War, and later became Governor of Kazusa. He married the daughter of Sugawara no Michizane, but in 898, when Michizane was demoted, he became a monk and entered Ninna-ji Temple, where his father, Emperor Uda, lived, changing his name to Shinjaku and continuing his training. He devoted himself to esoteric Buddhism, wrote many essays, and also became an accomplished painter. He later lived in Enjo-ji Temple, where he was revered by many as the reincarnation of Shinnyo Ajari (→ Prince Takaoka).
