…Honjin was a camp where a general was stationed during war, but because travel was considered a march, the lodgings of feudal lords were called honjin. In principle, there was one honjin per lodging, but in post towns with heavy traffic of feudal lords, there were sometimes more than one, and sometimes a wakihonjin or a temporary karihonjin was set up as a reserve. The honjin was located in the center of the post town, and as a privilege, it was a magnificent building equipped with a gate, entrance, and upper room, and the owner of the honjin was a prominent family representing the post town, such as the headman. …
