[Born] 614, Mecca Died in July 678. Medina. The third wife of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Her father was Abu Bakr, the first caliph. She was married to Muhammad when she was under 10 years old, and although she was attacked by anti-Muhammad forces in Medina due to a scandal caused by her carelessness, she was the most beloved of all of Muhammad's wives. She became a widow at the age of 18 without children. She began to get involved in politics in the later years of the third caliph, Uthman, and used force to oppose the fourth caliph, Ali. After being defeated and captured by Ali in the Battle of the Camels in December 656, she stayed away from politics and spent the remaining 20 years of her life in peace in Medina, where she was respected as one of the "mothers of the believers."
