Another name for the phylum Pelchidia, Nematoda. A general term for long, slender insects that lack segments like the roundworms that parasitize other animals, and were formerly called roundworms, nematodes, etc. The reason why long, slender insects are called roundworms is because when they are cut into slices, the cross section remains almost perfectly circular due to the thick cuticle layer that covers the surface of the body, and they do not collapse. 袋形動物門線虫類の一別名。他の動物に寄生するカイチュウのように環節がなく，細長い虫体の総称であって，かつては円形動物，線形動物，線虫動物などと呼ばれていた。細長い虫体が円虫と呼ばれるのは，体を輪切りにした場合，体表を覆っている厚いクチクラの層によって断面がほとんど完全な円形を保ち，つぶれないからである。センチュウ【今島 実】
