A plateau that rises in the center of the Russian Plain in the western part of the Russian Federation. It is bordered to the north by the Oka River and to the south by the Donets Hills. It begins south of Moscow and stretches about 1,000 km south, with a width of 500 km from east to west. The highest point is a 293m peak south of Tula, but the plateau is fairly flat, with an elevation of about 220-250m. There are well-developed gullies, and although the valleys are usually dry, soil erosion occurs during heavy rains. The strata are nearly horizontal sedimentary layers of limestone, chalk, and marl, covered by sand, gravel, clay, and other glacial deposits left behind by retreating glaciers.
