A city located in the northeastern part of Saitama Prefecture, occupying the alluvial lowlands on the west bank of the Old Tone River. It was incorporated as a city in 1971. The city center has developed as a market town since the early modern period. It is served by the Tohoku Main Line and the Tobu Isesaki Line, and is the site of the Tohoku Expressway Kuki Interchange, where the Ken-O Expressway branches off. It is the transportation and administrative center of the northeastern part of the prefecture, and is home to many public facilities such as the Prefectural Horticultural Research Institute. In 1993, Tokyo University of Science opened. It was an agricultural region that produced a lot of rice and pears, but it has been developed into residential areas, and the population has increased rapidly due to the construction of the Kuki Shobu Industrial Park. In March 2010, it merged with Shobu Town in Minami Saitama County, Kurihashi Town in Kitakatsushika County, and Washinomiya Town. The city suffered damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. 82.41 km2 . 154,310 people (2010).
