Born in the first year of the Joan era. Son of Kamo no Sukeyasu. Became the deputy chief priest of Kamigamo Shrine in 1214. A trusted vassal of the retired Emperor Gotoba, he fought against the Shogunate forces during the Jokyu War. He was captured at Rokuhara and exiled to Dazaifu.
