cuff

...the former is an application of an electrical circuit in which the deflection of a metal plate caused by pressure acts as an electrical capacitor, while the latter converts changes in pressure into strain on a string and records the resulting changes in electrical current.
[Mercury sphygmomanometer]
The most widely used method of measuring blood pressure in clinical practice is to wrap a pressure cuff (also called a manchette) around the upper arm, place a stethoscope on the distal brachial artery, and listen to the bruit (Korotkoff sound) that is heard as the cuff pressure decreases. With this method, blood pressure is measured indirectly from the internal pressure of the cuff wrapped around the upper arm, but the mercury sphygmomanometer is commonly used and is the standard for measuring the internal pressure in conjunction with the cuff.
