Clydebank

A city in the southeast of West Dunbartonshire, in the mid-west of Scotland, UK. It is located on the north bank of the River Clyde, in the northwest suburbs of Glasgow. Until the 1870s it was a farming area, but various industries such as sewing machines and cement developed thereafter. Shipbuilding is a particularly important industry, and the Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, and Queen Elizabeth II were built here. During World War II the city suffered extensive damage from air raids, and was rebuilt after the war based on a new urban plan. However, today shipbuilding and other heavy industries are no longer carried out here, and instead the city produces drills and other equipment related to the North Sea oil fields. Population: 29,610 (2004 estimate).
