Born: 1924/1925. Eritrea
Died: November 22, 1974, Addis Ababa Ethiopian soldier and politician. As a young officer, he was highly trusted by Emperor Haile Selassie, and in 1964, during the border war with neighboring Somalia, he achieved military feats so great that he threatened the capital, Mogadishu, earning him the nickname "Lion of the Desert". However, his desire for democratic reforms was at odds with that of the Emperor, and he retired from the military in 1965 and became a senator. In September 1974, after the Emperor was abdicated and the Provisional Military Administrative Council (provisional military government) was established, he became chairman. Later, as the provisional military government rapidly moved in the direction of socialism, he offered to resign as chairman on November 15, but was shot dead by the military who came to arrest him on November 22.

エチオピアの軍人，政治家。青年将校時代はハイレ・セラシエ皇帝の信頼厚く，隣国ソマリアとの国境紛争さなかの 1964年には，首都モガディシオを脅かすほどの戦功を立て，「砂漠の獅子」の異名を取った。しかし，民主的改革を望む立場は皇帝のそれと相いれず，65年軍を退役し，上院議員となった。 74年9月皇帝の廃位，臨時軍事行政評議会 (臨時軍事政府) の成立に伴い，議長に就任。その後，臨時軍事政府が急テンポで社会主義の方向に進むなかで，11月 15日議長の辞任を申出たが，11月 22日逮捕におもむいた軍の手で射殺された。
