Born: 1924/1925. Eritrea Died: November 22, 1974, Addis Ababa Ethiopian soldier and politician. As a young officer, he was highly trusted by Emperor Haile Selassie, and in 1964, during the border war with neighboring Somalia, he achieved military feats so great that he threatened the capital, Mogadishu, earning him the nickname "Lion of the Desert". However, his desire for democratic reforms was at odds with that of the Emperor, and he retired from the military in 1965 and became a senator. In September 1974, after the Emperor was abdicated and the Provisional Military Administrative Council (provisional military government) was established, he became chairman. Later, as the provisional military government rapidly moved in the direction of socialism, he offered to resign as chairman on November 15, but was shot dead by the military who came to arrest him on November 22.
