A mother ship for crab fishing in the North Pacific. It was called a crab factory ship because the crabs it caught were canned on board. Crab fishing is carried out in a fleet consisting of one mother ship, a converted second-hand cargo ship of 5,000 to 6,000 tons, two or three 90 to 100 ton independent ships, and six to nine fishing boats (Kawasaki ships) on the mother ship. When the independent ships arrive at the fishing grounds, they set crab gill nets on the seabed. After about eight to ten days, the Kawasaki ships are lowered from the mother ship, reel in the gill nets with net haulers, remove the crabs caught in them, and deliver them to the mother ship.
