In the Pacific Ocean south of the Kii Peninsula and the Indian Ocean, there is an even larger species, Dromidiopsis dormia , with a shell width of 20 cm, but in rocky shores and shallow waters there are many smaller species, such as Cryptodromia tumida , C. canaliculata , Petalomera fukuii , and P. wilsoni , which carry sponges or colonial ascidians on their backs. In all of these species, the female's reproductive pore opens in the base segment of the second walking leg, just like hermit crabs (usually in crabs, it opens in the carapace), and they are considered to be the lowest of the crabs. ...
