At the boundary between granite and basalt layers in the crust, there is a discontinuity in the velocity of seismic waves. This is called the Conrad discontinuity. In shallow granite layers, the velocity of longitudinal waves is 5.5 km/sec, and in deep basalt layers, 6.5 km/sec. This discontinuity does not exist in oceanic regions, but in the continental crust, it is thought to be located at a depth of 15 to 25 km. Several tens of kilometers below is the Mohorovicic discontinuity, which is the boundary between the crust and the mantle. Source: Asakura Publishing Dictionary of Laws Information |
