Omangaame

...The name comes from the song "Honihoro honihoro," and later came to be used to refer to the horse-shaped object that was hung from the shoulder and worn on the waist of an actor playing the role of a mounted warrior in Kabuki. In the early Bunsei era (1818-30), there was a Chinese candy seller who sang an incomprehensible phrase like "An nan konnan" in an amusing way, and together with the "Omangaame" dressed as a woman, whose "voice and gestures were strange and unparalleled," they were so popular that they were incorporated into Kabuki. The "Tokkaebee" were people who went around exchanging candy for broken pots and kettles, and were said to have been started by a man named Zen'emon from Tahara-cho, Asakusa, in the Shotoku era (1711-16) to build a bell for the Kishu Dojoji Temple, and later there were people who went around exchanging candy for old copper and old kishiru. ...

…〈ほにほろほにほろ〉とうたったことからの名で,のちに歌舞伎で騎馬武者に扮する役者が肩からつりさげて腰につけた馬のつくり物をこの名で呼ぶようになった。文政(1818‐30)初期には〈あんなんこんなん〉と,これもわけのわからぬ文句を節おもしろくうたう唐人あめ売があり,〈其音声いやみな身ぶり,また外に類ひなし〉といわれた女装の〈おまんがあめ〉ともども,歌舞伎の所作事にとり入れられるほどはやったものであった。〈とっかえべえ〉といわれたのは,そう呼び歩いてこわれたなべ釜などとあめを取り替えたもので,正徳年間(1711‐16)に紀州道成寺の鐘を造立するために浅草田原町の善右衛門なる者がはじめたといい,のちには古銅や古ぎせるなどと交換して歩く者もあった。…
