Omangaame

...The name comes from the song "Honihoro honihoro," and later came to be used to refer to the horse-shaped object that was hung from the shoulder and worn on the waist of an actor playing the role of a mounted warrior in Kabuki. In the early Bunsei era (1818-30), there was a Chinese candy seller who sang an incomprehensible phrase like "An nan konnan" in an amusing way, and together with the "Omangaame" dressed as a woman, whose "voice and gestures were strange and unparalleled," they were so popular that they were incorporated into Kabuki. The "Tokkaebee" were people who went around exchanging candy for broken pots and kettles, and were said to have been started by a man named Zen'emon from Tahara-cho, Asakusa, in the Shotoku era (1711-16) to build a bell for the Kishu Dojoji Temple, and later there were people who went around exchanging candy for old copper and old kishiru. ...
