…　第2次大戦後にシーガーを中心として結成したグループ，ザ･ウィーバーズThe Weaversが，1950年，黒人民謡歌手レッドベリーLeadbellyの作った《おやすみアイリーンGood Night,Irene》をレコードにしたところ大ヒットとなり，このグループに影響された大学生の3人組，4人組などが各地で生まれた。そうした中から，ザ･キングストン･トリオThe Kingston Trioによる古い民謡のリメーク《トム･ドゥーリーTom Dooley》(1958)が大ヒットして，フォーク･ソングは完全にポピュラー音楽の一部門を占めるにいたった。60年代，革新ムードがアメリカを覆う中で，フォーク･ソングはおおいにもてはやされ，プロテスト･ソングの伝統を継ぐシーガーやボブ･ディランから，かなり商業主義の色彩の強いものまで，それぞれに人気を集めたが，60年代の後半に徐々に変質し，一部はロックに合流し，一部は衰退していった。…
