A field of study that studies fundamental and fundamental issues related to law. In terms of the subject of study, it is a branch of jurisprudence in the broad sense, and in terms of research methods, it is a branch of philosophy. It is also called legal philosophy or jurisprudence. From the Greek sophists to the 19th century legal philosophy of Kant and Hegel, legal philosophy was considered a branch of political science, ethics, philosophy, and theology, but German general jurisprudence marked a turning point, and legal interpreters aimed to establish their own legal philosophy. In the 20th century, the critical legal philosophy of R. Stammler of the Neo-Kantian school played a pioneering role in the rise of modern legal philosophy, and today it is showing various aspects in line with philosophical trends. Its main issues include the definition of the concept of law, the examination of legal concepts and principles, the ideal of law, consideration of justice (theory of legal value), and jurisprudential methodology.

法に関する原理的・基本的問題を研究する学問分野。研究対象の面からいえば広義の法学の一分野であり，研究方法の面からみれば哲学の一特殊分野に属する学問。法律哲学，法理学とも呼ばれる。ギリシア時代のソフィストたちに始り，19世紀のカントおよびヘーゲルの法哲学にいたるまでは，政治学，倫理学，哲学，神学の一分野とみなされていたが，ドイツの一般法学が転換の契機となり，法解釈学者が固有の法哲学の確立を目指した。 20世紀に入って新カント学派の R.シュタムラーの批判的法哲学が現代法哲学隆盛の先駆的役割を果し，現在では，哲学の動向に歩調を合せて多彩な様相を呈している。その主要な課題としては，法の概念規定，法学上の諸概念，諸原理の検討，法の理念，正義に関する考察 (法価値論) ，法学方法論などがある。
