Conscius

Shortly afterwards, the book "Tetsugaku Jikyo" (1881) published by Tetsujiro Inoue and others included the term "consciousness," and it is known that this word was established as a term in philosophy, psychology, etc. around this time. The English word "consciousness" comes from the Latin word "conscius," which is made up of the prefix "cum" and the past participle of "scire" (to know). Since "cum" generally has a communal connotation, "con‐scius" meant (1) sharing a certain knowledge with someone or being in complicity with someone, or (2) having knowledge of a certain action, thought, emotion, etc., i.e. self-consciousness.
