This insect belongs to the family Pieridae of the order Lepidoptera. It is a relatively small butterfly, with a wingspan of about 4.5 cm. Females have many black markings on the surface of their hind wings, but males do not. It is widely distributed from the Mediterranean coast to the Middle East, India, China, Siberia, etc., and has long been known as a vagrant butterfly in England. Before the war, it was recorded mainly in western Japan, but in 1979 it caused a large outbreak in Hokkaido, and since then, many records have been found in the river basins of Hokkaido that flow into the Sea of Japan. It is believed that the records in western Japan came from the Korean Peninsula, and the recent records in Hokkaido came from the Russian Far East.

鱗翅目シロチョウ科の昆虫。やや小型のチョウで，開張は4.5cm前後。雌は後翅表面に多くの黒紋があるが雄にはない。地中海沿岸から中近東，インド，中国，シベリアなどに広く分布し，昔からイギリスでは迷チョウとして有名である。日本には戦前，おもに西日本で記録されたが，1979年に北海道で大発生し，以後，北海道の日本海に注ぐ河川の流域に多くの記録がある。西日本の記録は朝鮮半島から，近年の北海道の記録はロシア極東から飛来したものによると推定されている。
