A school of Roman law research that flourished mainly in 16th century France, with J. Cujas as its representative figure. Its cultural foundations lie in humanist thought and the Renaissance. In contrast to the pragmatic methods of the medieval Italian schools of commentary and commentary, it explored the legal texts of classical antiquity as sophisticated Latin texts, and studied the Corpus Juris Romanis from a philological and historical perspective. In particular, it critically investigated the revisions made to the legal texts by the editors when compiling the Roman Code, and played a bridging role to the historical and critical study of Roman law in modern times.
