Reprise (English spelling)

Japanese: レプリーゼ（英語表記）reprise

This refers to the distinctive whistling sound that is heard with whooping cough. The first 1-2 weeks after contracting whooping cough are in the catarrhal stage, which is characterized by cold-like symptoms, but then the patient enters the paroxysmal stage, in which the coughing fits characteristic of whooping cough become more frequent. The coughing fits continue to recur in fits, lasting 10 to 20 times in a row, the face becomes flushed, tears and saliva flow, and the patient feels distressed. When the coughing fit ends, the patient takes a deep breath, making a whistling sound (whistle). This is called reprise, and is a symptom that can also be used to diagnose whooping cough. Reprise can also be seen due to infection with respiratory syncytial virus and adenovirus, but it is usually milder than that of whooping cough.

百日咳のときにみられる独特の笛声をいう。百日咳に罹患して初めの1～2週間はカタル期といって風邪様症状であるが，その後，百日咳特有な咳の発作が多くなる痙咳（けいがい）期に入る。咳は発作的に引き続いて反復，続けて十から二十数回に及び，顔面は紅潮し，涙や唾液を流し苦しがる。咳の発作が終わるときに深く息を吸い，このとき笛のような音(笛声)を発する。これがレプリーゼで，百日咳の診断にも参考となる症状である。RSウイルス，アデノウイルスの感染によってもレプリーゼがみられることがあるが，百日咳のそれよりも軽いのが普通である。
