Hog deer

Japanese: ホッグジカ - ほっぐじか（英語表記）hog deer

A mammal of the Cervidae family in the order Artiodactyla (illustration). A medium-sized Asian deer with a long body, rounded back, and short limbs, somewhat similar to a wild boar. The fur on its body is smooth and brown or blackish brown. It does not have the long mane-like hair on its neck like deer. Males have relatively short antlers up to 59 cm long. It is 105-115 cm long, 60-75 cm high at the shoulder, about 20 cm long, and weighs around 50 kg. It is distributed from northern India to Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, etc. It has been introduced to Sri Lanka and Australia, where it has become wild.

偶蹄目シカ科の哺乳類（イラスト）。胴が長くて背が丸く，四肢が短い，イノシシにやや似たアジア産の中型のシカの1種。体の毛はなめらかで褐色ないし黒褐色。首にはシカにあるようなたてがみ状の長い毛はない。雄には，長さ59cm以下の比較的短い枝角がある。体長105～115cm，肩高60～75cm，尾長約20cm，体重50kg前後。インド北部からミャンマー，タイ，インドネシアなどに分布。スリランカ，オーストラリアには移入され，野生化している。
