…King Charles I borrowed a large sum from international financiers to be elected German Emperor, but in order to pay off the debt and cover royal expenses, he convened the Cortes in 1520 and forced a vote to approve the tribute, then went to Germany. This prompted the inhabitants of Castilian cities to form a rebellion comunidad (comunidads), whose members were called comuneros, and attacked the Corregidor and the city oligarchy that was in collusion with the royal authority, seizing control of the cities. The major cities formed the Santa Junta in August of the same year, and continued to resist the king's tyrannical rule, demanding the dismissal of Flemish officials, improvements to financial policy, and respect for the city privileges. …
