Located in Ibusuki District, Kagoshima Prefecture, this old town occupies the southeastern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula and faces Yamakawa Bay, an old submerged crater. During the feudal period, the main settlement was a port town for Ryukyu trade, and after the Meiji period it developed as a base for deep-sea fishing. It is also a base for bonito fishing and is a thriving seafood processing town. Vegetables and flowers are produced in the rural areas. There is Eel Pond, Nagasaki Nose, and Narukawa Onsen (pure salt spring, 52-90°C) on the west coast of the bay. The Ibusuki-Makurazaki Line runs through the town, and a ferry runs between it and Nejime Port on the opposite shore. In January 2006, it was incorporated into Kaimon Town, Ibusuki District, and Ibusuki City. 37.18 km2 . 10,884 people (2003).

An old town in Oe County in northern Tokushima Prefecture. It occupies the southern bank of the midstream Yoshino River, and its main settlement is near the confluence with the Kawata River, through which the Tokushima Line passes. Japanese paper has been manufactured here since ancient times. The Kotsu Mine, which produced iron sulfide ore, closed in 1969. Inbe Shrine is located in Yamase to the east, and Mount Takatsu, a famous azalea spot, is located to the west. In October 2004, it merged with Kamojima Town, Kawashima Town, and Misato Village in Oe County to form Yoshinogawa City. 42.27 km2 . Population: 12,029 (2003).

A former town in Yamato County in the southern part of Fukuoka Prefecture. It occupies the lowlands of the Yabe River basin and the mountainous area to the east. The alluvial fan forms a rice paddy area, and vegetables, grapes, and mandarin oranges are cultivated in the mountainous areas. Agricultural processing is also carried out. Mt. Mimaki is a scenic spot. In January 2007, it merged with Setaka Town in Yamato County and Takada Town in Miike County to form Miyama City. 26.38 km2 . 5,391 people (2005).

徳島県北部,麻植(おえ)郡の旧町。吉野川中流南岸を占め,主集落は川田川の合流点付近にあり徳島線が通じる。古くから和紙の製造を行う。硫化鉄鉱を産した高越(こうつ)鉱山は1969年閉山。東部の山瀬に忌部(いんべ)神社,西にツツジの名所高越山がある。2004年10月麻植郡鴨島町,川島町,美郷村と合併し,吉野川市となる。42.27km2。1万2029人(2003)。

福岡県南部,山門(やまと)郡の旧町。矢部川流域低地と東部の山地を占め,扇状地は水田地帯をなし,野菜,ブドウ,山間部でのミカンの栽培も盛ん。農産加工も行う。御牧山は景勝地。2007年1月,山門郡瀬高町,三池郡高田町と合併し,みやま市となる。26.38km2。5391人(2005)。
