A collection of medieval folk songs. The first anthology of early poetry (souga). Published before 1296 (Einin 4). Five volumes, five books. Contains 50 songs. Most of the lyrics and music were composed by the editor Myoukū, but there are also songs with lyrics by Reizei Tamesuke and Kanazawa Sadaaki. The collection is divided into four sections: Four Seasons, Congratulations, Love, Miscellaneous Top (with Impermanence), and Miscellaneous Bottom (with Shakkyo). In terms of content, many of the songs are named after the titles or sections of waka or Chinese poetry, and quotations from waka and Chinese poetry in the lyrics are more prominent than in later works. The songs for "Spring," "Summer," "Autumn," and "Winter" follow the ever-changing seasons and pray for their normal operation. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
