Shojin crab (English name: Plagusia dentipes)
This crab belongs to the family Grapsidae and lives on open ocean reefs, moving quickly across the surface of the rocks underwater (illustration). Its carapace is rounded and rectangular, measuring about 4.5 cm wide and 4 cm long, and is covered with short hairs. Its forehead is narrow and protruding, with a somewhat deep central groove. The first antennae are folded vertically on either side of the forehead and can be seen from the back. The front edge of the carapace has four serrated projections, and the front edges of the long segments of the ambulatory legs are also serrated. Its color is reddish brown, but the granules covering its chelipeds are dark red.
