...The royal family that arose in Jelling was Christianized around 970 under the rule of Harald Blåtand (r. 935-985), and his son Svend I conquered England and became its king (1014). His second son, Cnut II, became king of England in 1016, and after the death of his brother Harald II in 1018, he also became king of Denmark. In 1028, he was also crowned king of Norway, making the country king of three kingdoms (known as the North Sea Empire). Svend II (r. 1047-74), son of Cnut's sister Estrid, established the domestic order that led to modern Denmark during his reign, and later kings would trace their lineage back to him in some way.
