A shrub of the Polygonaceae family native to the West Indies and tropical America. As its Japanese name, Hamabebudo, suggests, it grows well near the coast and is sometimes planted as a windbreak. The branches grow in a slightly zigzag pattern and reach a height of about 6 m. The leaves are thick, leathery, glossy, cordate, 15-18 cm wide, and have red mid-veins. In summer, the upper leaf axils produce racemes 15-25 cm long that contain numerous fragrant yellow-white flowers. Eventually, the tepals become fleshy and bear fruits over 1 cm in diameter like grape clusters that droop. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
