Chemical formula: SOCl 2 . Also known as sulfonyl chloride or thionyl chloride. A colorless, fuming liquid with a pungent odor. Boiling point: 76°C. It is miscible with solvents such as benzene and chloroform, but reacts with water to produce SO 2 and HCl. The liquid and vapor are irritating to the skin and mucous membranes. It is used in organic synthesis to replace hydroxyl and mercapto groups with chlorine atoms. It is also used to introduce sulfone groups by reacting with Grignard reagents.
