The professional class of merchants in medieval Europe who engaged in trade between distant regions as well as with other parts of Europe. In the 19th century German historical school's theory of stages of development, the Middle Ages were considered an era of urban economies, but the scope of the economy was conceived as narrow, linking cities with the surrounding rural areas. As a correction or criticism to this idea, the existence and importance of long-distance commerce in the Middle Ages was eventually emphasized. Professional merchants who made large profits by taking advantage of differences in price systems between distant regions existed in various places at various times, but the term is usually used in relation to medieval Europe.

中世のヨーロッパで隔地間の交易ならびにヨーロッパ外との交易にあたっていた職業的商人層。19世紀ドイツの歴史学派の発展段階説においては，中世は都市経済の時代とされているが，その経済範囲は都市と周辺農村を結ぶ狭いものとして構想されていた。この考えに対する補正ないし批判としてやがて強調されるようになったのが，中世における遠隔地商業の存在と重要性である。隔地間の価格体系の差を利用して大きな利潤を上げる職業的商人層はさまざまな時代のさまざまな土地に存在したが，この語は中世ヨーロッパに関連して用いられるのが普通である。
