A historical tale from the early Kamakura period. One volume. Author unknown. It was probably written shortly after 1223 (Joō 2). It chronicles the victories of six emperors during their reigns: Takakura, Antoku, Gotoba, Tsuchimikado, Juntoku, and Gohorikawa, that is, the main historical events. In addition to the Genpei War and the death of Emperor Goshirakawa, it details the Jōkyū War, and is notable for its progress and criticism of Emperor Gotoba. A major feature of the work is that it is permeated with a Confucian viewpoint on politics and governance. The writing is an elegant mixture of Japanese and Chinese, with couplets, and is thought to have influenced the lyrics of works such as The Tale of the Heike.
