The transmission of measurement results to a location far away from the object of measurement, where instructions and records are given and data is processed. It is used when it is difficult to measure directly nearby. For example, it is used in industrial measurements such as voltage, current, power, and frequency in the electric power industry, gas flow rate in the gas industry, gas volume in a gas holder, water level, flow rate, pressure, pH, and turbidity in the water industry, as well as measurement of precipitation, water level, water quality, meteorological data, and marine data in rivers. In addition, observation of outer space and celestial bodies using rockets and artificial satellites, and remote sensing of the earth's surface are also examples of remote measurement. The transmission path must have little attenuation, noise, and distortion, and the required precision and accuracy can be obtained even over long transmission distances. It is also required that multiple quantities can be transmitted over a single transmission path. For this reason, the quantity to be measured is first converted into an electrical signal, and then pulse modulation is applied before transmission. To transmit multiple quantities, multiple transmission using time division or frequency division is used.

測定の対象から遠く離れた地点に測定の結果を伝送し，そこで指示や記録を行い，またデータを処理したりすること。直接近くで測定することが困難な場合に用いられる。たとえば電力事業における電圧，電流，電力，周波数，ガス事業におけるガス流量，ガスホルダのガス保有量，水道事業における水位，流量，圧力，pH，濁度などのような工業測定のほか，河川の降水量，水位，水質，気象データ，海洋データの測定にも用いられる。さらにロケットや人工衛星などによる宇宙空間，天体の観測，地表の遠隔探査 (リモートセンシング) なども遠隔測定である。伝送路の減衰，雑音，ひずみなどが少く，伝送距離を長くしても所要の精度と確度が得られ，また一つの伝送路で多種類の量が伝送されることなどが要求される。そのため被測定量をまず電気信号に変換し，さらにパルス変調などを施して伝送する。多種類の量の伝送のためには，時分割あるいは周波数分割による多重伝送が用いられる。
