...Yen'an is still important as a revolutionary holy land, with many of the former residences of Mao Zedong and other party officials, as well as party and military institutions, remaining in Fenghuang Mountain, Zaoyuan, Yangjialing, Wangjiaping, and other areas. The tower on Baota Mountain across the Yan River (Yan'an Baota) is said to have been built in the Tang Dynasty, but the current one was rebuilt after the Ming Dynasty and became a symbol of Yan'an during the War of Resistance against Japan. However, the old town was almost completely destroyed during the Japanese bombings and the Third Civil Revolutionary War. ...
