Villages located on the seashore are written as ura or hama in historical documents, and are generally referred to as fishing villages. This expression fits villages whose livelihood is fishing, but seaside villages that engaged in a mixture of occupations such as salt production, shipping, agriculture, and forestry are more appropriately called sea villages. The term sea village has also been used in folklore studies. In recent years, a perspective has been raised to reexamine Japanese culture from the perspective of the sea as an archipelago culture, and the actual conditions of various sea villages are awaited. → Related items Head shaking Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
