...Krishna was eventually identified with Bhagavat, a god worshipped by the Yadavas, and was then considered an incarnation of the sun god Vishnu, becoming the supreme deity of the Bhagavata sect of Vaishnavism. According to the Krishna legend that developed in later times, Vishnu was born as Krishna, the son of Vasudeva of the Yadavas and his wife Devaki, in order to punish the demons who had appeared on earth in the form of tyrannical kings. Fearing persecution by Devaki's brother Kamsa, Krishna was raised by Nanda, the chief of a cowherd village, and his wife Yasoda, along with his brother Balarama, but from his childhood he performed miracles, killing many demons, and eventually killed the evil king Kamsa. ...
