Oura

Japanese: 大浦 - おおうら
Oura
A district on the east coast of Nagasaki Bay, in the southern part of Nagasaki City's downtown area, in the southern part of Nagasaki Prefecture. Located on a slope overlooking Nagasaki Port, it was a settlement for foreigners from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. Even today, it is one of the centers of tourism in Nagasaki, with its Goto stone (mainly sandstone) cobblestones and European-style houses that exude an exotic atmosphere. The area is centered around the former Glover House, the home of the Englishman Thomas Blake Glover, who made a major contribution to the modernization of Japanese industry (World Heritage Site in 2015), Glover Garden, which features a collection of Western-style wooden buildings from the Meiji period, and Oura Cathedral, the oldest Gothic wooden building in Japan (National Treasure, World Heritage Site in 2018). On the coast, there is Tojinmachi, an old streetscape, and on reclaimed land, there is a customs office, warehouses, factories, etc.

Oura

This is the former town area in the western part of Minamisatsuma City, in the southwest of Kagoshima Prefecture. It is located at the base of the Noma Peninsula, in the southwest of the Satsuma Peninsula. In 1951, it was separated from Kasasa Town as Oura Village, and was incorporated as a town in 1961. In 2005, it merged with one city and three towns, Kaseda City, Kasasa Town, Bozu Town, and Kimpo Town, to form Minamisatsuma City. The Ouragata Lagoon reclamation project was completed in 1965, and is now used as rice paddies. Ponkan oranges and tea are local specialties. Folk performing arts such as the smallpox dance and the taiko drum dance are famous.
