Candy (sugar) dumplings - Amechimaki

...A sweet substance made by decomposing and saccharifying starch with enzymes or acids, with maltose, glucose, maltotriose, etc. as its main components. However, nowadays, candies made with sugar and sweet sugar are often called ame. In China, the detailed manufacturing method was already described in the 6th century Qi Min Yaoshu, and the first appearance of the word tagane in Japanese literature was in the Jinmu Chronicle. In ancient times, the characters 餳 and 糖 were also used, and the Engishiki records that tribute was paid from various countries, that there was a "sugar" (candy) in the west market of Heian-kyo and that 3 to 7 sho of sugar were made from 1 koku of glutinous rice and 2 to of mokomugi (wheat sprouts).

…According to the Engishiki, it was made with glutinous rice and black-eyed peas, and was celebrated on May 5, but was offered as a gift between March 10 and May 30. During the Muromachi period, ame-chimaki (candy dumplings) were sold on the streets. These were made by steaming glutinous rice, pounding it into mochi, wrapping it in straw, and steaming it again. When the straw was removed, the dumplings were yellowish-white like candy, hence the name. During the Edo period, many different kinds of chimaki were made. …
