A former town in Minamiuwa District, southern Ehime Prefecture. It occupies the Sozu River basin and faces Sukumo Bay to the south. The central settlement is where a castle stood in the late Middle Ages, and Suwa Shrine stands on the castle ruins. Fukaura in the south is the base for sardine and bonito fishing, and seafood processing is also carried out there. The coast is part of Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park. 愛媛県南部,南宇和郡の旧町。僧都(そうづ)川の流域を占め,南は宿毛(すくも)湾に臨む。中心集落は中世末期に城のあったところで,城跡に諏訪(すわ)神社がある。南部の深浦はイワシ・カツオ漁業の根拠地で水産加工も行われる。海岸は足摺宇和海国立公園に属する。2004年10月南宇和郡御荘町,一本松町,西海町,内海村と合併し,南宇和郡愛南町となる。75.35km2。9598人(2003)。
