A type of pneumoconiosis. Also called asbestosis. Asbestos is a general term for fibrous silicate minerals, and is widely used as an industrial raw material. In recent years, the use of asbestos has rapidly increased in shipbuilding, construction, automobile brake linings, and other fields, and the opportunities for occupational and non-occupational exposure to asbestos have increased. Asbestosis is a disease that begins with respiratory bronchiolitis and alveolitis, leading to diffuse pulmonary fibrosis, and is accompanied by thickening of the parietal pleura (called pleural plaque) and calcification.

塵肺（じんぱい）の一種。石綿肺ともいう。石綿(アスベスト)は繊維状のケイ酸塩鉱物の総称で，ひろく工業原料として利用されているが，近年，造船，建設，自動車ブレーキライニングなど石綿使用分野が急速に増加し，職業的にあるいは非職業的に，石綿曝露（ばくろ）の機会が増加してきている。石綿症は，呼吸細気管支炎と肺胞炎に始まり瀰漫（びまん）性の肺繊維症をきたし，また壁側胸膜の肥厚(胸膜プラークと呼ばれる)と石灰化を伴う病気である。
