Babylonian creation story. It was dedicated as a ritual text at the Esagila Temple of Marduk, the chief god of Babylon, on the afternoon of the fourth day of the New Year's Festival, which took place from January 1st to the 12th (March to April in the current calendar). It begins with, "When the heavens above were not yet named...", and is named after the first two words, Enuma (time) and Elish (above). The primordial beings Apsu (fresh water from the abyss) and Tiamat (salt water from the sea) mix together, from which the gods are born. The noise of the cheerful young gods causes the gods to split into two and fight each other. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
