Iyobushi

Japanese:
Iyobushi

A popular song from the end of the Edo period. During the Bunka period (1804-18), dyed goods from Matsuyama, Iyo Province (Ehime Prefecture), were popular in Edo, and as a result, "Iyobushi" also became very popular. The original song (motouta) was a song about Matsuyama's famous products and places, but during the Koka and Kaei periods (1844-54), parody versions were created in various places. For example, the opening lyrics of the song, such as "Flowers are Ueno" in Edo and "Sakai Sumiyoshi" in Osaka, became song titles themselves, and there was a time when the name "Iyobushi" was forgotten. At the height of its popularity, many songbooks with the title "hautaiyobushi" were published, so it can be said that the name "hauta" (hauta) was popularized by Iyobushi. Today, it is sung as hauta in Tokyo and as a folk song in Matsuyama, the hometown of the song.
