...It arose toward the end of the Pleistocene, following the Late Paleolithic Ater culture, which had been widespread in North Africa until then, and developed separately from the Mesolithic cultures of Europe. The representative site is El Mekta, near the town of Gafsa in southern Tunisia, and was named after Gafsa, which was called Capsa in Roman times.
