...From the beginning of the 18th century, folk dances from various parts of Spain, such as the fandango, seguidilla, and jota, began to spread to the royal court, theaters, and general public, and, combined with older musical styles, formed what is now considered the epitome of Spanish dance. In particular, the bolero, which was invented at the end of the 18th century by dancer Sebastián Cerezo, probably from a type of seguidilla, became very popular in Madrid and other parts of Spain throughout the 19th century, and was also recognized as a representative Spanish dance in other countries.
