1919‐78 A white American jazz pianist and bandleader. His real name was Leonard Joseph Tristano, and he was commonly known as Lennie Tristano. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he was born with weak eyesight, but became completely blind at about the age of 10. He went on to study at the Illinois State School for the Blind and then the American Conservatory of Music. He worked in Dixie and Rumba bands, and at the age of 27 he moved to New York, where his unique musical theories led him to become a disciple of Lee Konitz (1927-, alto saxophone) and Warne Marion Marsh (1927-, saxophone).
