A river in the underworld in Greek mythology. To go to the underworld, the dead had to cross this river in a boat operated by the ferryman Charon. Acheron was the son of the earth goddess Gaia, and was banished to the underworld for the sin of making the defeated giants drink the river's water when the gods of Olympus fought against the giants. He gave birth to Ascalaphos by mating with the dark nymph Orphne or Gorgira. There are rivers of the same name in many places, but the one in Epirus originates from a deep valley, flows underground in the middle part, and forms a harmful swamp near the mouth. It is thought that this special river gave rise to the association of Acheron with the underworld. In the mystery religions of the Roman Empire, Acheron was believed to flow between the constellations of the Antipodes near the south pole of the sky.
